As you can see from the map below, Nzoia's water problem is not one of scarcity.
The majority of the drinking sources in Nzoia come from unclean surface water. Even a wealth of water is not good if it causes sickness. The villagers of Nzoia need clean water for their families. They need a filtration system that is simple and sustainable.
In January 2014, Well Water Global constructed 6 biosand filters alongside community members to provide safe drinking water for the families in this community. Each of these jumbo biosand filters supply clean water for 40 people for 10-15 years with very little maintenance. This project also involves an education program to teach proper sanitation practices (what good is clean water in a dirty cup?) and filter maintenance.
